My Earliest Memory Of Creativity

Early Memories

When we are children, we are so open and receptive to new ideas. We have not yet developed any biases.

I really don't remember too much before I was about 3 years old. But, I believe one of my very earliest memories was watching my Mother create a pen and ink drawing. If was a type of fashion design. There was a lovely young woman wearing a mink stole. (The featured image is just an example that somewhat reminded me of my Mother's illustration).

Mother sat down with an ink bottle, blotter, pen, and paper. It all came together with her imagination. She added some water to the ink and she made a textured pattern. I couldn't believe how real the fur looked! I was mesmerized!

This led to another precious memory. I was a bit older, maybe around 4 or 5 years old. Mother spread out a sheet on the floor for me to sit on. She began to pile old magazines around me. I remember most of the magazines were Life Magazine. These are large-sized magazines with beautiful full-color glossy images. Many people in the 1960's couldn't part with their magazines because of the impressive photography.

To add to our tool kit, Mother brought me children's safety scissors. She told me to cut out any photos that I wanted to keep. Usually, I had to handle magazines with care. She said that we were going to start an art project. All I knew is that I was excited to spend time with Mom and look at all of the colorful photos.

After I had quite a few photos chosen, she brought me colored construction paper. She said we were going to glue the photos on the paper. She wanted me to choose the colors of construction paper that I wanted. I was trying to figure out how we were going to do this when I knew we ran out of glue.

I needn't have worried. Mother was always resourceful. She brought me into the kitchen and told me we were going to make a paste with flour and water! I thought Mother was a genius!

I know in today's world with our amazing technology that these stories may seem mundane, but any time I spent with my Mother meant a great deal to me.

Do you have any stories about creative projects that meant a lot to you as a child?

Be well, be blessed.
